Rosie Fatt, Navajo basket weaver

Folk Art

Rosie Fatt, a basket weaver from Paiute Farms, Utah, can give you a tour of the trading post and explain the arts & craft traditions. Here she is displaying a folk art weaving. She is standing in the museum room which houses a collection of Navajo historic items and memorabilia.

 

Navajo Rugs by Alice P. Yazzie

Alice P. Yazzie lives on Black Mesa, one of the most remote areas of the Navajo Nation. She raises her own sheep, cards and spins her own wool. Rugs by Irene Atene and other local weavers are also available.

Samuels Family Doll in cradleboard

Navajo Dolls by Ron & Freda Samuels

A large selection of Navajo dolls by the Samuels family is for sale. All are wearing hand-made traditional clothing and exquisite genuine silver and turquoise jewelry. The infant pictured here is resting in a cradleboard on brilliant red sandstone rocks at sunset west of Oljato. The location is accessible by horseback tour with Navajo Country Guided Trail Rides.

 

Navajo Wedding Baskets

Navajo wedding baskets by Rosie Fatt of Paiute Farms, Utah; Mary Yazzie of Douglas Mesa, Utah; Lutie Cly of Oljato, Utah and Rosemary Cly of Oljato, Utah are featured at the post. The baskets are works of art and are used in traditional ceremonies as well.

Quiver on hogan door in Mystery Valley

Bow, Arrows & Quivers

Award-winning Navajo artist Garry P. Holiday of Oljato, Utah makes traditional bows, arrows and quivers. His art is shown here on the door of an ancient hogan in Mystery Valley. Navajo Country Guided Trail Rides can take you on a horseback trail ride to this hogan after you have finished your shopping at Oljato Trading Post & Museum.
